MIDTESOL is deeply concerned about the recent modifications to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) that will place international students in the impossible position of choosing between their health and education. International students are an asset to higher education programs. They should not be put under any undue stress regarding the risk of completing their education due to the pandemic.
More than ever, this is a time that requires flexibility and compassion. Students and their respective educational institutions need to be able to decide whether face-to-face, hybrid, or online classes are appropriate depending on their local and institutional situations. This policy runs counter to MIDTESOL’s mission to support “…those involved with English language teaching, teacher education, administration and management, curriculum and materials design, and research.” MIDTESOL is steadfast in its commitment to supporting international students and scholars during this challenging time.
