Four Things Every Principal Should Know about English Language Learners by Persida and William Himmele is a quick and easy read that introduces basic language information as well program models for principals and administrators. This book is less than 100 pages and concisely gives administrators the beginning foundation of what having English Language Learners (ELLs) in their building means for them while encouraging conversations with specialists and teachers. If your principal is new to working with ELLs, this book would be a great asset to get him or her started with providing services for ELLs in the classroom and the school.
This book also comes with free resources found on Himmele and Himmele’s website including activities, a powerpoint, and discussions surrounding how to best acclimate ELLs into the mainstream classroom, building, and district. This book is a solid resource in supporting administrators to feel prepared to handle ELLs in their building.
There is a companion book for teachers (Four Things Every Teacher Should Know about English Language Learners) that discusses and helps prepare teachers for ELLs in the classroom. This book addresses making connections with ELLs, planning and collaborating to meet ELL needs, and so much more. These books are definitely worth a look.
