Shabina Kavimandan, Kansas
Dr. Shabina Kavimandan serves as the Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Kansas State University. Her K-12 teaching experience includes international as well as national experiences within elementary and secondary school settings. Her current research emphasis includes issues specific to teacher positionality, teacher agency, and various contextual factors such as home-school connections and literacy development through students’/families’ linguistic competencies.
Currently, Dr. Kavimandan serves as the co-chair of the College of Education’s diversity committee and is the diversity point person for KSU Olathe. Dr. Kavimandan has authored several books and articles for numerous nationally known journals. In addition to her research, Shabina also teaches graduate level courses to teachers working on their ESOL endorsement and advises and mentors doctoral candidates in Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Kavimandan has directed and managed several Title III National Professional Development projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Kavimandan has presented at numerous conferences locally and nationally and continues to provide professional development to educators across the state of KS on issues specific to bilingualism, translanguaging, multicultural literacy efforts, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Outside of her work at Kansas State University, Shabina currently serves on the board of Global Ties KC: a citizen diplomacy effort in the Midwest leading to study abroad opportunities, youth exchanges, and opportunities for our local communities to interact with other cultures through person-to-person interaction.

Elissa Jones, Kansas
Elissa Jones is the ESOL teacher at Topeka West High School, where she has been since 2017. She teaches courses in English language development, co-teaches in the core content areas, and coordinates other aspects of the ESOL program on campus. Elissa has been teaching in secondary schools since 2003 in varied settings, from Chicago to Wisconsin to Iowa and now Kansas. She is passionate about teaching for equity and excellence.
Elissa earned a B.S.Ed. (2003) from Oklahoma Baptist University and an M.S. in Curriculum & Instruction focusing in Literacy Studies and ESL/Bilingual Education (2008) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a National Board Certified Teacher (2020) in English as a New Language for Early Adolescence-Young Adulthood.

Nikki Ashcraft, Missouri
Dr. Nikki Ashcraft has been immersed in the field of TESOL for over 30 years. She holds a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from Georgia State University and a Ph.D. in Adult Education from the University of Georgia. During her TESOL career, she has taught ESL in community-based adult literacy programs, community colleges, and intensive English programs in the U.S. She has also taught EFL and trained teachers in Mexico, Chile, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan. She is currently an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Missouri, where she teaches in its online M.Ed. TESOL program and has the pleasure of working with teachers in Missouri and around the world. Dr. Ashcraft has held various leadership roles within TESOL International Association, including Chair of the Teacher Educator Interest Section and inaugural Chair of the Membership Professional Council. She holds a continuing education certificate in Nonprofit Management from Collin College and recently published an article in English Teaching Forum on managing volunteers in language teacher associations. Her passion lies in providing teacher training for community volunteers in adult literacy programs to develop their pedagogical skills and enhance their teaching effectiveness.

Christy Conaway, Missouri
Christy Conaway, originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, began her English teaching journey over 25 years ago in South Korea, where she developed a passion for the field. She later earned an MA in English with a TESOL focus and has taught in EAP programs in Texas and Missouri. Since 2007, Christy has been part of Missouri State University’s English Language Institute, where she teaches, coordinates textbooks, leads edtech initiatives, develops curriculum, and creates diagnostic tests. In 2019, she earned her CELTA certification. A proud MidTESOL member, Christy is eager to give back to the organization that has supported her teaching for many years.

Dr. Ben Vilkas, Nebraska
Dr. Ben Vilkas teaches education courses at Wayne State College, including those focused on strategies for teaching English Learners as well as courses on curriculum, assessment and best instructional practices in the elementary school classroom setting. Before teaching at WSC, Dr. Vilkas taught at Grand Canyon University. He is a member of MIDTESOL and Kappa Delta Pi.
