Dr. Kisha Bryan
Kisha Bryan is an Associate Professor of ESL Education and Chairperson in the Department of Teaching & Learning at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned an MEd in TESOL from the State University of New York-Stony Brook and a Ph.D. in TESOL/Bilingual Education from the University of Florida. She is a former public school English Language Arts and ESL teacher. Dr. Bryan has served on the editorial advisory boards of the TESOL Journal, Literacy Research: Theory, Method, and Practice Journal, and the Caribbean Educational Research Journal. In addition, she is an English Language Specialist for the U.S. Department of State and a current director on the TESOL International Association Board of Directors. Dr. Bryan identifies as a public scholar and advocates for marginalized peoples around the world. Her current research focuses on language weaponization and the role of language, literacy, and racial ideologies in adolescents’ identity construction.
A native of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, USA, her linguistic background and schooling experiences were the impetus for both her career choice(s) and her unyielding advocacy for marginalized populations. In her free time, she enjoys listening to podcasts, shopping, and hanging out with her teenage daughter, Ryann Olivia.
Dr. Bryan’s luncheon presentation is entitled “ELT Policies, Practices, and (Proposed) Priorities.”
Dr. Shelley Fairbairn
Former MIDTESOL Journal lead editor Shelley Fairbairn, Ph.D., is a veteran ESL teacher and a professor in the Drake University School of Education in Des Moines, Iowa. Her teaching foci include preparing pre-service teachers to design effective lesson plans and assessments for K-12 students and empowering both pre- and in-service teachers to meet the needs of multilingual learners through linguistically and culturally responsive practices. Prior to joining the Drake University School of Education faculty, Dr. Fairbairn concurrently taught English as a second language courses for the Drake University International Center and served as a K-12 ESL teacher in two Des Moines area school districts.
Dr. Fairbairn’s international experience includes three years of teaching English as a foreign language in Jakarta, Indonesia and one year of teaching ESL and ESL certificate courses at the Regional Language Centre in Singapore. She has conducted teacher professional development sessions and workshops in Belize, China, Canada, and the U.S., focused on linguistic differentiation of instruction, assessment, and grading. Her scholarly work has focused primarily on effective assessment and instructional practices for multilingual learners, but more recent publications focused on faculty self-care practices.
Her workshop is entitled “Weaving Hope through Academic Access: Linguistic Differentiation for K-12 Teachers," a how-to for differentiation across five levels of English proficiency
Mariya Dostzadah Goodbrake
Mariya Dostzadah Goodbrake is the founder and executive Director for Global FC, a Kansas City non-profit organization supporting refugee youth and families using soccer as the primary vehicle for positive change. Previously, she worked with International Medical Assistance in Mexico, coordinating medical projects to advance health care for the economically deprived Maya populations in the Yucatan Peninsula.
A native Afghan raised in Iran and India before immigrating to Canada with her family, she relocated to the United States in 2012. Mariya is also a Cultural Diversity Professional (CDP), active public speaker, intercultural trainer, researcher, and training curriculum developer.
Her presentation is entitled “Weaving Hope in Your Community.”
Conference registration includes, but isn’t limited to, two full days of conference presentations, workshops and discussions, networking opportunities, access to the exhibitor hall, and continental breakfast and catered or buffet lunch on both Friday and Saturday.
