MIDTESOL Board Meeting

President’s Report -Susan

  • Nothing to report

First Vice President -Jane

  • Reported that 175 registered for conference; 58 for morning workshop, 73 for afternoon workshop; total registered so far 190
  • Need volunteers for registration—Sheila, Barb S., Jan, Dennis volunteer
  • Sheila and Susan will pick up Margo from airport—Sheila will take her back
  • Barb and Barb will take Margo and Mark to lunch
  • Susan will host Margo and Mark for dinner
  • MIDTESOL will pay for the dinners for Margo and Mark

Second Vice President -Jan

  • Membership up by 14 from last report
  • 228 members total
  • MO 141, IA 36, KS 23, NE 21, Other 7
  • 53 memberships due for renewal at end of year
  • Suggests having renewal form on website
  • Tom suggests an e-mail to members to reminding them to update membership
  • If people provide e-mail, Jan e-mails to remind for renewal
  • Tom suggests comparing conference registrations with memberships to update membership information
  • TESOL is willing once a year to give us labels of people in our region so that we can send out MIDTESOL info to promote it in our states

Treasurer -Cheryl

  • Handed out report current to end of September 04
  • Current report does not include income or disbursements from conference
  • Predicts conference won’t bring in any additional income because of payments that will need to go out
  • Reminds people to fill out travel reimbursement forms
  • Mileage is 34.5 cents per mile for people who drive to airport
  • No mileage reimbursed for driving to conference

  • Will hand out ballots to members as they register for conference
  • Two people not on ballot--Ladonna and Marguerite—have one more year to serve
  • Ana Mary Mueller could replace Ladonna for IA rep. She might be interested—lives in IA City
  • We need to ask Ladonna if she wants to continue
  • Marguerite has been to two meetings—never responded to messages for meeting—said she’d be at the meeting, but has never turned in any reports, etc.

Publisher’s Liaison -Ayse

  • Handed out list of publishers with contact info
  • Got another exhibitor just yesterday—needs 31 total tables
  • Teach First pulled out and got a refund
  • Ayse will man the McGraw Hill table
  • Income from publishers is good--$85/table plus $25 for each additional table
  • Suggests raising table prices for publishers to $125/tablenext time
  • Cheryl says that at IO conference is $150/table

  • Brings up price of ads—Concordia Village bought an ad and paid $100 for it
  • Questions price of ads—what should we charge?
  • Tom agrees that $100 is an appropriate price for it
  • Tom suggests printing a small ad for publishers in the newsletter
  • Ayse says that this info is already up on website
  • Cathy thinks that the publishers ads may give us more credibility, so it might be a benefit for us
  • Jan suggests we consider the price of printing the ads
  • Ayse suggests $200 for full-page, $100 half page, $25 business card size
  • Cheryl suggests we don’t offer ads to save printing costs
  • Tom suggests selling ads on the back or front of the MIDTESOL newsletter
  • Cheryl thinks maybe selling ads makes us too commercialized
  • Susan suggests selling them ads in the conference program or in the membership directory
  • Jane suggests calling them a Premier Publisher—we include an ad in the conference program
  • Tom suggests Ayse, Jan and new newsletter editor get together and talk about costs of ads /where to print them and make proposal at January meeting
  • Total revenue from publishers: $1865

Newsletter Editor -Victoria

  • Not present--Susan reports
  • Last board meeting we talked about having 3 newsletters per year
  • Passed around newsletter suggestions
  • Quote of the meeting from Susan—"All elected terms are two year terms except for the ones that are one"

 

Webmaster -William

Iowa -LaDonna

  • Not present--Cathy reports
  • IO Conference—Racing Across Languages and Cultures Feb. 15-17, 2005
  • Title 3 grant money was awarded to develop a professional development project—this past summer they sent administrators, teachers, and AA personnel to Mexico where they took classes in Spanish—purpose was to build empathy for immigrants coming into the U.S.
  • Several workshops for mainstream content area teachers have been held
  • Working with Dept of Education, Des Moines, Iowa Public TV--collaborating on a website for professional development—will have video, based on book called "My New Student Doesn’t Speak English"—is supposed to go live in May

Nebraska -Joan

  • Not attending--Susan reports
  • ESL is in decline

Kansas - Marguerite

  • Not attending

Historian -Leslie

Awards -Cathy

  • Announced the 3 winners of the Travel Awards—Heidi Wright "No Money? No Books? No Problem!", Mary Barratt "Sustaining the Effects of Cross-Cultural Orientation", Rene Kreisel "Training Immigrants for Employment in Patient Care"
  • Summer Institute Scholarship was awarded to Glynda Stiner of U. of N. Iowa, but she didn’t get notification in time so wasn’t able to attend—will attend next year along with next year’s winner
  • Pat-on-the-Back Award was given to Tom Riedmiller

Rules and Regulations -Barbara A.

  • Nothing to report

Socio-Political Concerns/Professional Standards -Barb S.

  • Will give a conference presentation on election issues concerning education and immigration

Old Business

  • Jane asks what to do when a presenter hasn’t registered
  • Susan answers that she reminds people ahead of time that they haven’t registered and tells them on-site they need to register and pay

New Business

  • Susan noticed that board members’ personal information is on MIDTESOL website
  • Susan and Jane suggest no personal info should be published—only for board members use
  • Everyone agreed to publish affiliation, name, e-mail and office number only
  • We need to tell William to pull it off of site
  • MO Spring Conference—in Springfield March 12--theme is "Hand in Hand: Building Bridges Across Our Communities"—on March 11, we’ll just meet at a restaurant for social time
  • Susan—passed around legal issues that Ron Long sent along
