President's Report
Report of Fall Conference - Dennis
- We have received a preliminary report: Net was $5700 (not including expenses
from the Union). We cleared about $2000.
- He doesn’t have the total number of registrations, but the estimate is around
160.
- Dennis is the giving awards report. Membership is needed for this committee.
Cathy proposed that the winners of one year’s awards get to choose next years’
award winner in order to get more board involvement.
- Motion: we accept Cathy’s suggestion
- Barbara seconded
- Cheryl says we should make it an invitation rather than a requirement

First Vice President - Susan (Lois)
- Fall Conference in Lincoln, Neb.
- They have met with Corn Husker Hotel in Lincoln.
- Ron says they had a meeting there 5 years ago and it was nice.
- It is located in the center of Lincoln.
- U of Neb, Lincoln didn’t work out
- If we can get 100 rooms for 3 nights, we can use the conference rooms for
free. Room rates are $79 per night
- If we don’t get 100 rooms, (90-99 rooms) we would be charged $500 for the
use of the conference rooms
- The hotel also provides a shuttle from the airport to the hotel
- The hotel provides a/v equipment in the conference rooms (VCR and screen)
-- checking on overhead
- The ballroom is available for the plenary
- Provide registration nametags and rooms for publishers’ exhibits
- Dates: Oct. 3,4 (Fri and Sat)
- No Plenary speaker at this point. Susan asked for ideas for a speaker and
for a blurb in the MIDTESOL newsletter – Karen said she would publish the
information
- Ron Long asked what is planned for Friday since if there is no preconference
there would be no reason for people to come on Thursday night.
- Lois says there is board meeting and preconference workshop in the morning,
and reception in the evening as well as concurrent sessions Friday evening.
- Cheryl says maybe we won’t come up with 100 rooms, but if we lose money,
that’s OK. She suggested working with the hotel.
- Ron Long raised the issue of bill paying after the conference, not before.
- Jane mentioned that in Lincoln on that Friday NAFSA 4 is having open house
with INS service reps at Embassy Suites. She suggested trying to work out
something with INS there as part of the conference.
- Jan mentioned that our membership numbers in Nebraska are lower and conference
numbers might be lower because of this.
- Dennis reiterated Cheryl’s comment that we can loose some money on this.
- Jan suggested including lodging with the registration to ensure that people
stay there.
- Lois says there are hotels that are cheaper but the services and facilities
are much better. We are getting an excellent rate for this luxury hotel.
- William says the hotel has beautiful website and it can be linked to our
site.
- Dennis brought up the issue of Lois leaving in June, but Lois says she wants
to come back for the conference in Oct. Dennis asked who will replace her
when she leaves.
- Lois suggested that a couple of people are available to replace her at Univ.
Neb. Lincoln.
- Ron suggested contacting Carmen Sossa who is the state dep. Of Ed rep. there.
- Motion: We go to Nebraska for fall conference

- Ladonna asked about the plenary speaker. Lois suggested that when Susan
comes back they will look into it.
- Barbara asked about compensation
- Ron suggested that we paid 500-600 plus expenses
- Cheryl says we can pay up to 1000 for plenary speaker
- Dennis will keep an eye out for a plenary at TESOL
- Ladonna suggests bringing in a big name in scholarship like Krashen to draw
students and teachers who haven’t had an opportunity to interact with theorists
- Lois brought up that she would fax a proposal to Corn Huskers and Dennis
for him to sign
- Ladonna mentioned a woman, Lynda Franco, who used to work for Center for
Applied Linguistics, who does teacher training who writes book "Why teacher
reading to second language learners is different" – possible plenary
speaker.
- Lois mentioned maybe she would be good for preconfernece workshop.
- Lois asked Ladonna to forward the suggestion to Susan (susan26799@aol.com)
