Guidelines for Contributions to MIDTESOL Matters

Conference Reports
What: A report on an ESL-related conference you have attended or that is coming up in the Midwest. It should include the name of the sponsoring organization, the theme, when and where it took place, the intended audience for the conference, key speakers, major topics discussed, the approximate number of participants, and the web site (if applicable)
How long: 200-300 words


Instructional Material Reviews
What: A review of a textbook, curriculum guide, computer program, web site, or video. Include a brief summary of the material (without evaluation), an evaluation of the material (with both positive and negative features), reasons the teacher or reader would want to use (or not use) the material and what the significance is for ESL instruction. Your review must be non-commercial. Citations should follow APA format.
Note: MIDTESOL Matters editors maintain a list of members who are interested in writing reviews for the newsletter. We can supply the material to be reviewed. Please contact us if you wish to be added to the list of reviewers. You can keep the book or other material that you review, you can add a publication to your CV or resume, and you will know that you have contributed to the betterment of ESL instruction throughout the Midwest!
How long: 500- 700 words

Teaching Tips

What:
Techniques or strategies used in the language classroom to impart knowledge to students from a variety of languages and cultures. Even something learned in a class from a teacher that you wish to pass on might be useful, provided the teacher is acknowledged. Your submission need not be long, just informative
How long: 50-500 words.

Web Site Recommendations

What: Recommended ESL-related web sites. The submission should include the title of the site, the complete URL, a brief statement about the information available on the web site, its intended audience, and the credentials of the site's creator.
How long: 50-100 words (more extensive web site reviews may be submitted as an instructional materials review)
