MIDTESOL Matters
Fall 2004

Once again, I want to thank all of the MIDTESOL members for their continuing support this year. I have especially enjoyed working with all the dedicated members of the Executive Board. Next year, I will be serving as chair of the nominating committee. There are many elected and appointed positions on the board, and we are always looking for new people to serve. Please consider becoming more active in MIDTESOL.

Our fall conference in Independence, Missouri is on October 22 and 23 at The Hilton Garden Inn. Our pre-conference and plenary speaker will be Margo Gottlieb, Director of Assessment and Evaluation at the Illinois Resource Center. Her topic on Friday will be “Standards-Based Assessment, Curriculum, and Instruction.” The plenary session on Saturday will address “Assessment of English Language Learners: Politics or Passion?” Mark Grey, Director of the New Iowans Program at The University of Northern Iowa will also be a pre-conference presenter. The title of his workshop is “Immigrants and Integration: The Political and Economic Context for ESL Education in the United States.” It is not too late to register. All the information in on the MIDTESOL website. There will be a wide variety of presentations in all interest areas, from K-16 to adult education. In addition, there will be sessions of interest for content teachers working with English Language Learners.

The newsletter will continue to have highlights of activities from the four states, and next year you will be hearing from some of the other board members. I hope you will consider submitting articles to be posted on the web site.

I have enjoyed serving as President of MIDTESOL this past year and am looking forward to serving as Past President for the upcoming year. I hope to see many of you in Independence on October 22 and 23.

Susan Schindler

President
