Postcard from Nebraska

By Joan Hamilton

In Nebraska we are still seeing large increases in our ESL population, although students insisted that many of the Latino population especially would be returning south because of the World Trade Center disaster.

According to Nancy Rowch of the Nebraska Department of Education, Nebraska has purchased a statewide license for the TransACT Translation Library which will allow each school district access to a variety of forms and documents in some 22 different languages. The translation library includes documents pertaining to such topics as school lunch programs, attendance, and special education among many others. Anyone interested in further information should contact Nancy Rowch, Nebraska Department of Education by phone (402-471-2477) or email nrowch@nde.state.ne.us.
