Message from the Editors
Greetings MIDTESOL
Members!
This issue of the newsletter offers readers a front-page article by Stephen Krashen in which Krashen examines data collected before and after the passing of California’s Proposition 227 and Arizona’s Propostition 203. Krashen considers the effects of such propositions on LEP learners. [Note: This article is not currently available on the MIDTESOL web site. Permission to post it is pending.] Next, there are two articles that address practical classroom application of materials: Phil Plourde and Olga Silina outline seven principle points to consider when using Content-Based Materials. Carolyn Shanoff of the Federal Trade Commission gives us insight into what the FTC is doing to prevent ESL students from being victimized by fraudulent business operators.
Our regular features have much to offer as well. Start by catching some photos from Fall 2001MIDTESOL and Ron Long’s President’s message for an overview of the conference. Page 11 gives information on upcoming conferences, so be sure to give it a glance. Teaching Tips provides two perspectives on teaching comparative adjectives and book reviews examine one text for writing and one for grammar. There are postcards from all member states too.
Pleasant reading!
