Missouri State Legislation
HCR 7, recognizing international education as a critical component of higher education, passed the House this week. The sponsor of the resolution, Rep. David Pearce (R-Warrensburg), said, "We need to do everything we can to welcome international students to our state. Having international students on our college campuses creates a diverse learning environment and prepares students for life and work in a global economy."
The bill passed the House by a vote of 143-0 and now moves to the Senate for its consideration.

Rep. Jerry Nolte (R-Gladstone) co-sponsored this resolution. Missouri is the 20th state to have an international education bill passed in at least one chamber. HCR 7 will be voted on by the senate in May 2008. To see the full resolution, go to

HB 1463 prohibits the admission of unlawfully present aliens to public institutions of higher education. It states that the registrar of each institution must annually certify to the appropriation committees of the General Assembly that the institution has not knowingly admitted any illegal alien prior to the approval of any appropriations. The bill was sponsored by Jerry Nolte (R-Gladstone) and co-sponsored by Barney Fisher (R-Richards).

The Special Committee on Immigration voted 10 to 3 in favor of the bill. A hearing has not yet been scheduled for consideration of HB 1463 by the House of Representatives
