MIDTESOL Annual General Meeting Lee’s Summit, Missouri October 20, 2001 |

30 members present Treasurer’s Report, Cheryl Eason Frank Bramlett passed along $20,000,
which has been used to open an account at Firstar in Warrensburg. The
finances of MIDTESOL are described as being in transition, having not
been audited in some time. Cala Shields suggested that an external audit
be conducted, noting that it is important to have our books in order to
maintain non-profit status. She moved that an interim report on MIDTESOL
finances be published in the summer newsletter. Susan Schindler seconded;
the motion was carried. Membership Report, Theresa Bries Theresa Bries could not be present.
Newsletter Editors’ Report, Karen Schwelle Laura Stallings will join Karen
as co-editor of MIDTESOL Matters beginning with the upcoming issue.
She was not able to be present for this conference. Costs for copying
MIDTESOL Matters have been running $250-350 for 525 copies, and
mailing costs have been $60-70 per mailing. LaDonna Brunk suggested offering
members the option to receive the newsletter electronically in order to
reduce mailing expenses. DJ Kaiser suggested that pdf format might be
a workable option for this. It was agreed that Karen and Laura will look
into suitable ways of offering the newsletter in electronic format. Past President’s Report, Jeanne Angel In 2001-2002, Dennis Muchisky will
serve as First Vice President; JoAnn Zoller-Wagner was elected as secretary,
but will need to be replaced on an interim basis after she moves in June;
Joan Hamilton will serve as Nebraska Representative; Jane Robison will
serve as Missouri Representative; Cheryl Eason will serve as Interim Treasurer;
and Cathy Howland will serve as Interim Awards Chair. Vacancies include
an Interim Iowa Representative and an Interim Rules and Resolutions person.
An upcoming vacancy is Second Vice President (Membership). LaDonna Brunk
volunteered to serve as Interim Iowa Representative, and there was much
rejoicing. Sociopolitical Concerns Report, Christopher
Renner Christopher Renner could not be
present. His report may be read on the MIDTESOL web site. First Vice President’s Report, Ron Long This year’s MIDTESOL conference
is the first to feature a K-12 theme. It included 38 presentations, 3
with a focus on technology. 80 people participated in the PCI, surpassing
the 60 that were expected. Overall the conference had about 225 participants. Awards Report, Cheryl Eason LaDonna Brunk won the TESOL Academy
Award and presented at MIDTESOL 2001 based on that experience. Cheryl
reminded all present of the awards that are available. Nebraska Report, Joan Hamilton The Nebraska representative couldn’t
be present. Iowa Report, Cathy Howland The Iowa Language and Cultural
Concerns Conference will be held in February at the Des Moines Holiday
Inn. On September 20-21 Area Education Agency 6 hosted two days of workshops
featuring Alba Ortiz. 300 people attended. Ron Long and Cala Shields suggested
having extra newsletters printed and made available at events such as
these. It was agreed that state reps will request extra newsletters from
the editors. Kansas Report, Cecilia Prieto-Morehouse The Kansas representative couldn’t
be present. Missouri Report, Susan Schindler Information about the Missouri
spring meeting is forthcoming. Susan pleaded for people to pass information
along to state reps about what is happening in their programs. Web Site Report, William Eubank William Eubank could not be present.
Tom Riedmiller said that job announcements should be sent to William and
encouraged everyone to check out the web site, which has been receiving
thousands of hits per month. Cathy Howland suggested that people send
information about student projects to be posted on the web site. TESOL 2002 Report, Tom Riedmiller TESOL 2002 will be from April 9-13
in Salt Lake City. Watch for information about a MIDTESOL gathering. The meeting concluded with the
passing of the gavel from Tom Riedmiller to Ron Long, 2001-2002 president. |
